AB 10U – Cruz News

10/14/17 2nd Place USSSA 10U Ghost and Goblin’s Tournament!

AB 10U started its inaugural season off on a high note taking second in the USSSA Ghost and Gobblins tourney. This was the first official tournament for this new team and they did not disappoint. Their first game was at 8AM on a brisk Saturday that never really warmed up. It took an inning to get the girls going but they pounded out 9 runs to beat Washington Blaze. With a bit of rest they took on the Pacific Fury and fell behind early. It looked bleak at the end but with a thrilling last inning comeback the team rallied from a 7-4 deficit to win 8-7 as time expired. That win put them in 3rd place for bracket play where they met the #2 seed Venom within an hour. Momentum helped the girls hit their stride from the start and they posted a 10-2 win. Up to that point the Venom had been thumping on their opponents so it was a rude intro to AB ball for them.

That win led them to the championship game against the Shock. Being game 4 of their first tourney day may have been a bit much against a very good pitcher. The players gave it their all but finally posted their first loss in tourney play. A great day and great effort taking home hardware in their first tourney but it got even better. The parents stepped up to the dugout decoration challenge and took first place among the 10U teams so AB represented all the way around. As coaches we couldn’t be more proud of the players and appreciate all the support the parents have brought since Day 1. A good start for this new team for sure.

11/10/17 USSSA Veterans Day Tournament 3rd Place!

AB 10U headed south for their second fall tourney by playing in the USSSA Veterans Day Memorial in Chehalis. The team started where they left off in the Ghost and Gobbling with a game against the Shock. They shook off that rough start to rough up the Bat Company from Oregon to finish day one at 1-1. Their final pool game was set for a 7am start the next morning. It took a while to wake up but the victory over the Diamond Dusters set them up for Gold bracket competition.

Once again they ran into a tough test as the quest for a final four berth is never easy. PNW Force came to play and the back and forth left the game tied at 3-3 going into the bottom of the fourth. The game time clock showed time was running out so the team was challenged to get it done NOW! Shyanne was first up and beat out an infield hit. Unfortunately the overthrow at first begged to advance to second but a great throw and tag got her for out number 1. Needless to say Shyanne was heartbroken but would find redemption soon after. Lots of teams would be reeling after that and it appeared that way as another infield hit from Elisa resulted in out number 2 but this team has something special in them. Anna was next up and was hit by a pitch to keep hope alive. With Anna running on the next pitch, Lily punched one past the shortstop and left fielder for a triple that scored the go ahead run. Out number three was recorded soon after as mere seconds remained on the game clock.

As time expired and the celebration started the umpire declared that another inning was needed. Shyanne’s redemption was at hand. Determined and focused Shyanne put the team on her back by striking out the side on 12 pitches. A great win and the opportunity to advance to another championship game was at hand if they could beat a very good Sabotage team from Olympia. Sabotage was simply too much and ended up winning the tourney but another outstanding effort by this very game team was appreciated by coaches, parents and the opposition. The order of finish ended up:

Sabotage – Champions
Shock – Second
AB – Third
Team Seattle – Fourth

With a second and third earned in their first two tourneys the team will now focus on getting better the rest of the year. Look for them to revisit Chehalis in March in their quest for another shot at a title.
